EQUINE MOTION Series of Four is a group of four large-scale woodcuts
expressively cut, inked, hand-rubbed, and printed on Japanese Kozo papers with
water-soluble relief inks. The woodblock images: 1.

REINER 4.
SALTA LIBRE
Each woodcut is float-mounted in black wooden shadow box frames with archival
materials and UV protected plexiglass to preserve and protect each archival print .
When working on these horse woodblocks and others, I feel and think about what
Japanese woodblock artist Shiko Munakata says about his work " The mind goes
and the tool walks alone."
Starting in late fall 2009, I began these woodcuts and continue to create through
spring 2010. I began working less than year ago with water-soluble inks and small
rollers on large animal images. After finishing my season of reining horse
competitions and working with my trainer, I found myself needing to draw and cut
this size images of horses. I drew horses in motion in a number of different
disciplines on the wood and then let the process and spontaneity of cutting take
over in completing them. Often an entirely new energy of an image develops from
the cutting than that which I often began drawing. In drawing or painting an image,
there is more doubt, fussing and revision of my images. But in cutting these images
and printing these images Japanese-style, I find a more intense, more expressive
automatic medium (energetically and physically)- even if it's more 'indirect' in
process. Physical and mental absorption take over more quickly in the creation
process and end result than other media does for me.
